The thing of nightmares - Stephen King's IT!

July 14, 2017

Hello lovelies,

I must admit this has been one of the hardest books for me to read purely because of the size. I believe Stephen King's book has about 1,138 pages in total and finding the time to sit down and read it has been very hard. IT is a book about a seven children who are being terrorised by a 'being' which usually takes the form of a clown (called Pennywise).

The clown is killing people in the small town of Derry and causing havoc. The book is told in two narratives and two different time periods which at first was quite hard for me to follow, I've honestly never read a book quite like it, from the story to the way King writes. I formed real connections and felt with the characters, from the anger of a woman being abused to the sadness of the kids who were bullied.

This book is very unlike anything I have ever read. I like horrors but this book is very well written and detailed and I found myself having to google a few words because I was like 'what the hell is that?'. It's the only horror book where I can say it's also educational! Horror-wise I didn't find it as scary as my friends did, maybe because I'm so used to horror novels? Bits were very rude, racists and gory but as a student nurse gore doesn't phase me.

If I'm totally honest I found the first half of he book interesting but thought I can't read another 50% of this... Once I hit 50% it started to get a lot more interesting, I thought finally some horror and some action! So it's one of those books where you have to hang in there and then you're pleasantly rewarded. A little warning: This book does contain racism from characters purely because of the time period in which it is set and it also has so quite graphic sex scenes so if that isn't your thing you may have to give the book a swerve or just skip pages!

All in all: One of the cleverest authors I have read, took me a while to get into the book but once I did I couldn't put it down and I read this before bed and didn't have nightmares so the tales my friends told me were all wrong. Either that or I am hard to scare! I do recommend this book to anyone who likes horror but I advise you look at the amount of pages because I for one was shocked when I saw the book in store, it's massive!

My rating:

If you like the sound of this book you can purchase it on your kindle or a physical copy from the link below. Thank you for reading, Lauren x

    1. You have no idea how long it took me to read this, I must have been on and off reading it for months and only finished it because I went abroad and had all the time in the world!

  2. You're one tough cookie, girl! I was absolutely terrifying of "IT" when I watched it ages ago. I can only imagine how much more intense the book is (as they always are, comparing to the movies). It's quite a read though. Well done on conquering it!

  3. I've actually never read horror ( can barely watch it so using my imagination might be even more frightening). I'm very curious about reading a Stephen King book though!

  6. I've wanted to read this for a while actually, I read Stephen King's Misery a while back and the claustrophobic nature of that unnerved me :)

    1. It's a very good book if you don't mind the length and have the time to read it. The reason I found the first half boring could be because I wasn't reading it all together, I was going weeks before picking the book up again!
